Is Your Nervous System Stressed?

At Spine & Wellness Co, you may notice that we talk an awful lot about the nervous system. This week, we’re diving into why!

So what exactly is your nervous system? In short, your nervous system includes your brain, spinal cord, and a vast network of complex nerves. This system is responsible for sending messages back and forth between your brain and your body. In other words, your nervous system is your communication system.

Your brain controls your body’s functions, communicating through the spinal cord that runs from the brain down through your back. Chiropractic care supports your nervous system directly by influencing all of the nerve connections that exist throughout your spine. Keeping your nervous system healthy and adaptable is key for maintaining optimal body function.

What Stresses the Nervous System?

Nervous system stress is inevitable in life and comes in three primary forms:

  • Physical stress can occur from an injury, like a fall or accident, but it can also come as a result of pregnancy or childbirth. Daily activities like prolonged sitting or spending time hunched over a computer contribute to physical nervous system stress as well.

  • Emotional stress impacts your nervous system in many unseen ways. Relationships, work, finances, parenting, and even just daily decision-making all impact emotional health. Your nervous system takes note of these stressors and does its best to adapt.

  • Environmental stressors show up as chemicals in body care or household products, toxins in the air, and even pesticides/herbicides in food. These toxins contribute to the nervous system’s total stress load.

What Supports a Healthy Nervous System?

If your nervous system is stressed (and if you’re a normal American, it most likely is in some capacity!), chiropractic care is a powerful tool in your toolbox for supporting a strong, healthy, adaptable nervous system. By bringing the spine and joints into proper alignment, chiropractic adjustments help keep the communication pathways from your brain to body free and clear. This leads to greater nervous system adaptability, meaning that your nervous system can more quickly and easily respond to stressors. In other words, stress is essentially “less stressful” when your nervous system is in good shape!
