Manual vs. Activator Adjustments: What’s the Difference?

Much like massage and other forms of bodywork, chiropractic adjustments can vary significantly by style. Two common styles of chiropractic adjustments are those done manually and those done with a tool called an activator. So what’s the difference? Is one better than the other? And which style do we use at Spine & Wellness Co.?

Let’s dive into those questions and more!

What is a manual chiropractic adjustment?

A manual chiropractic adjustment is often the most common chiropractic style people picture in their minds when they think “chiropractor.” This style involves the doctor placing their hands directly on the body and manually adjusting the area through the applied pressure. Manual adjustments will vary in pressure depending on the practitioner and the area being adjusted.

Another form of manual adjustment comes through what are called table drops. With these adjustments, the doctor will use a drop-away table to facilitate the adjustment. As the chiropractor applies pressure to your back, the coordinating moving part of the table will drop slightly at the same time.

What is an activator adjustment?

Also called an instrument adjustment, adjustments done with an activator utilize a small hand-held tool to deliver the pressure or “thrust” portion of the adjustment. With these adjustments, a chiropractor will examine your entire spine, typically from your neck all the way down to your pelvis. They will use the activator to deliver any needed adjustments along the way. Activator adjustments generally deliver less force than a manual adjustment, but can be just as effective.

Which technique is the best?

The answer is that they’re both fantastic! Depending on your unique makeup, personal preferences, potential trouble areas, and past experiences with chiropractic adjustments, one style may be more effective for you than another. The best way to learn which style works best for your body is to see a practitioner who is willing to employ both methods depending upon your needs.

In our office, we use both manual and activator adjustment techniques…and sometimes both in the same session! We work collaboratively with our patients to deliver the care that is most suited for their needs and wellness goals. On any given day, this can look like a manual adjustment, table drops, an activator adjustment, traction therapy, muscle work, assisted stretching, or a combination of all of the above!

We’re here to serve you and provide care that employs the most effective techniques for supporting your wellness journey.
